One of the best ways to cut down on food waste in your home is keeping track of whatโs in your freezer. If you know whatโs in your freezer and how long itโs been in there, you wonโt have to do any guesswork about when things need to be eaten before they spoil or end up covered in freezer burn. In order to help you keep track of what itโs in your freezer, I put together a simple printable โFreezer Inventoryโ log you can download for free below.
How To Use The Freezer Inventory Printable
Just download the freezer inventory, print it out, and then go through your freezer and write down everything you currently have in there. (It’s okay if you don’t know how long things have been in your freezer or when you ought to use them by. Those columns are there to help you keep track of those details moving forward as you add new items to your freezer.)
Once youโve completed your initial inventory, you wonโt have to go digging through the freezer to find out if you had another package of ground beef somewhere in there. And as an added bonus, your freezer will stay tidier too, because you wonโt have to pull things out or move them around as much.
And perhaps the biggest benefit of having an up-to-date freezer inventory is that it makes meal planning a lot simpler! Instead of having to dig through your freezer to find out what you have on hand, you can check your list and know instantly. Download the freezer inventory printable using the button below!

Bonus Freezer Inventory Tips
- Consider laminating the printable or putting it in a sheet protector. That way, you can write on it with an erasable marker and reuse it again and again.
- Hang your inventory on your fridge or inside a nearby cabinet. Having it close to the freezer will make it easier to remember to use it.
- You can skip over any frozen treats during your inventory. (Personally, thereโs little chance Iโm going to forget about frozen treats, and we tend to go through them quickly anyway!)
Whatโs your favorite freezer organization hack?

I made a freezer inventory list for my chest freezer using a spreadsheet on the computer. My list has columns: Location, Food type, Amount, Date Frozen, Brand/Where Purchased. I keep the items in storage baskets so I can lift them out & get them according to location in freezer, ie left, middle, right, top, middle, bottom.

I also keep one for expiration dates on refrigerated items – milk, O.J., eggs, sour cream, cream cheese, eggs, etc. Helps to have a list so I know what is about to expire and add them to my grocery list, and not have to let cold air out checking each item. Then update the list with new expiration dates as I buy them.
For the freezer, I divide meat up in whatever size or quantity I usually use and vacuum seal or put into individual quart freezer bags, then place those bags altogether into a gallon-size freezer bag(s) and mark the contents and date with a permanent marker – i.e., chicken breasts, pork chops, ground beef, ribs, corn on the cob, etc. That way, the types of meat are together, and I can easily just pull out one or two chicken breasts, a porkchop, etc., and not have to search around in the freezer. It’s been working really well, for me.
Also, for my upright freezer, I bought a rectangular plastic basket about 3 or 4″ tall, and I’m going to try standing up these packages of frozen meats, and see how that goes – as soon as I get a chance to do it!
